Thanks Class of 2010

The graduating seniors of the co-ed swimming and diving team developed a strong bond, maybe by dealing with some nuances of the sport like occasional early morning practices and always changing pool time. Captains Julie Beauchemin and Matt Flynn, along with Chloe Chen Krauss, Steph Ydoate, and Troy Hutchinson persevered as members of a small team with very talented athletes who often could not compete with other teams in the powerhouse Dual County Swim league. This year, these seniors led the growing HHS Swim and Diving team to a 3rd place finish in the inaugural season of the TVL coed league. Individually, each of these seniors qualified at least once in their HS career for post season Sectional and State Championships. Jess Harrison was State Champ in 2008 in the 500 yard freeestyle, while 1 meter diving school record holder Matt Flynn was a two time Sectional Champion – breaking the meet record this year, and runner up in the State championships. Steph Ydoate joined Matt as a 1st team TVL All-star, with Matt also being a 2 time 1st team MWDN 1st team All Star. And to close out his HHS diving career, Matt was recently named a 2010 High School All-American honors – making him one of the top 130 HS divers in the country

TVL Meet Net News Article

The Holliston High School Swimming and Diving Team completed it’s regular season with a solid 3rd place finish in the First Annual Tri-Valley League Swimming and Diving Championship meet held Monday night at Wheaton College.

While official results are yet to be posted, Coach Brian Porter and Diving Coach Charlotte Rea enabled great performances by the kids, including helping 9 team members meet qualifying standards for post-season championships, which start this upcoming weekend.

The Girls 200 Yard Freestyle Team and 400 Yard Freestyle team both swam State Sectional Qualifying times. This, along with previously qualified 200 Yard Medley Relay and another 200 Yard Freestyle team, allowed coaches Porter and Rea to enter 7 girls in Saturday’s Central/South State Sectional Championship meet being held at MIT. These swimmers are Seniors Julie Beauchemin and Stephanie Ydoate, Sophomores Christina Belforti and Rachel Dinehart, and Freshman Carolyn Banak, Danielle Potemri, and Brittany Cuevas.

Christina Belforti also swam a state championship qualifying time in the 100 Yard Backstroke, which allows her to compete in this event not only this week, but the following Sunday at the Division 2 State Championships at Harvard University.

On the Boys side, Senior Matt Flynn capped an undefeated season by winning the TVL 1 Meter Diving Title with a personal best and new HHS 1 Meter Diving record of 321.15 – exceeding his previous high by over 40 points. Senior Troy Hutchinson qualified for his 1st Sectional Championships with a personal best score of 191.05. Both Troy and Matt will compete Sunday in the Boys Sectionals at MIT, with Matt also competing the following week at the State Championship meet at Harvard.

Other notable performances will be updated when the official scores come in. But Lisa Paecht took 3rd place in the girls 1M diving event – an outstanding accomplishment for this 1st year diver.

TVL Meet Prelim results

Official results and times from the TVL meet haven’t been sent out yet, so I can’t update any information yet, But my sense from watching everyone was that there were a lot of good performance.

What I do know is that it seems that those kids that were on the cusp of qualifying for post season times did. Here is what I understand for Post Season

• Christina Belforti improved her previous sectional qualifying time in the 100 Yard Backstroke to also qualify for States

• Matt Flynn won the TVL Diving Championship with a Personal Best and new HHS 6 Dive School record of 321.15 – a 40+ increase in his previous best. Matt is also a State Qualifier for HHS

For Sectionals:

• Troy Hutchinson culminates his HHS Diving career by qualifying for Sectionals in 1 M diving. Troy took second in the TVL with a personal best of 191.05, and qualified his 11th different dive.

• The girls 200 Yard Freestyle Relay and the 400 Yard Free Relay both qualified for sectionals. So with these results, Steph Ydoate and Carolyn Banak have both become Sectional Qualifiers.

So here are the Participants for this weekend’s Sectionals:

Boys

Matt Flynn
Troy Hutchinson

Girls

Julie Beauchemin
Stephanie Ydoate
Christina Belforti
Rachel Dinehart
Danielle Potemri
Brittany Cuevas
Carolyn Banak

Great job by these swimmers, as well as Brian and Charlotte for helping them achieve their goals, and mixing up swimmers across the relays to get multiple kids into the sectionals!

Having worked and scored diving, I do know that Lisa Paecht came in 3rd in the TVL diving, with an outstanding score of 167.1 This is a Sectional qualifying score – outstanding for a 1st year diver. Next year, Lisa will certainly have 11 dives required for her to be in sectionals, and I’m putting my money on her for states as well!

A clarification to some questions I heard yesterday. Hopkinton came into the meet with TVL Champions T-shirts. This raised some eyebrows, as it seemed presumptuous before the TVL meet was even held (DSM, BTW, would up winning last night in a tight race over Hopkinton – our 2nd place girls relay team was the difference in the meet – if Hopkinton had come in 2nd instead of us, they would have won the meet).

However, here is the official explanation – I spoke to Jim Carboneau about this. Hopkinton is the season TVL Champion. League rules declare the champion only based on the regular season. The TVL meet is just a qualifying meet – it allows kids to see how they stack up across the league and allows them to qualify for sectionals and states, but has no bearing as a team in the league championship.

So, indeed, Hopkinton is the official TVL Champion.

Banquet Info

This year’s HHS Swimming and Diving Team Dinner will be held on Thursday, March 4th starting at 6PM.

This year it will be held at the Fairview at Pinecrest – which is the clubhouse at the Pinecrest golf course. Rossi’s restaurant in Millis – where we held the banquet last year – now operates this facility and will cater it for us. We’ll have a similar Italian Buffet as last year.

I’ve reserved it to start at 6PM, with the dinner buffet starting at 6:30. Cost will be approximately $20.00 per person, and parents and siblings are invited. Pinecrest can hold up to 115 guests, so we will have to limit it if it gets to that size. But I don’t anticipate we will fill up.

The approximate $20.00 cost includes the meal, catering, and soft drinks, as well as coaches gifts. Rossi’s is giving us a nice discount, and HABA contributes some $ to offset the costs.

Please send me an e-mail if you plan to come or not, just so I can start getting an idea of how many people we will have. I will send out an “official” invitation e-mail shortly with final details and costs, and where to send your payment. We need to provide the caterers from Rossi the final number and payment by February 25th, which is less than 3 weeks away, with February vacation in the middle.

For those of you who haven’t attended these, it’s a fun night, good food, and ends with coaches awards, team awards, and other nice things that are put together.

Hope to see you all there.

A few things that might be of interest to you for the swim team.

A few scheduling things. Next Thursday and Friday, the Keefe Tech pool time is 5:30-7:00 AM. These are the mornings of finals. Jim Carboneau, the AD, has offered to rent the Milford Pool on Friday evening for the team, so that they can still have their work-out and practice (Jim also wanted it to be a fun practice for the kids so they can unwind after finals). So I believe Brian will make the morning practices of Finals either optional or cancelled altogether, and if the Milford Pool can be rented, have practice then. Brian should be letting all the kids know.

Another thing to get more pool time for the swimmers will be done on Sundays. While M-F practices are for the Swim and Diving Team, Sundays now will be Swim Team only. That way, the lanes taken up by the divers will be used for swimmers, and both coaches will be able to work with all the swimmers.

Only 3 meets left of the season, followed by the TVL Championship meet on February 8th, which will mark the end of the season for most kids. However, several kids will move on to the Sectionals and States – with some swimmers not qualified yet but pretty close. Last Monday, the Girls 200 IM Relay team of Christina Belforti, Brittany Cuevas, Julie Beauchemin, and Danielle Potemri qualified for the Sectionals, joining Matt who qualified for both Sectionals and States. http://www.hollistonhaba.com/Pages/Sports/Swimming/Results/2009-2010/2009-10_Post_Season_Qualifiers.pdf

Several swimmers have times that are close to qualifying, including Christina Belforti (missed by just 0.03 seconds in the 100 yard backstroke), Danielle Potemri (50 Free) and Steph Ydoate (100 Free). Times to improve for qualifying can be found for each swimmer in their result sheet (3rd column).  http://www.hollistonhaba.com/Pages/Sports/Swimming/Results/2009-2010/individual_results.html .

All of the kids results, as well as best team times, are on the web at  http://www.hollistonhaba.com/Pages/Sports/Swimming/Results/2009-2010/2009-10_results.html Many kids have shown great improvements in their times, and they can see this on their sheets. Hopefully, with good practices these next 2 weeks, they can improve on their performances!

Finally, a nice article was put in the Tab this week. It started with some bland words I submitted with all the kids mentioned (basically what I sent out a week or so ago and what was posted on Holliston Net News, but was then enhanced with quotes from Brian and others. I posted a copy of it on the “In the News” area of the website. The link to the article itself is  http://www.hollistonhaba.com/Pages/Sports/Swimming/In_the_News/2009-10/Swim_Team_Tab_Article_Jan_14.jpg
